Getting started with HAM

Anyone have a good resource on getting started with HAM radio from scratch? Books, online resources, or a forum for it, where members are helpful and not too critical of new people? :)

The best way to get started is to buy used equipment from a "swap shop" or "ham fest" which are typically organized by your local Ham radio club in order to learn how the equipment works.  You will then need to study for your Basic Qualification exam.  The RAC website at https://www.rac.ca/en/amateur-radio/beginner-info/getting-started.php has more information on what is involved.

There was a time that is was not legal to own an amateur band transmitter if you did not have a valid amateur licence.
I wonder if that has changed?

Ham radio always seemed like an intersting hobby. I think those that have these hobbies are able to get a different experience than just being online or even short wave radio. It seems like a really good thing to do.
