ABC Networks Leaving FTA July 10th

ABC's free satellite feeds are changing their modulation JULY 10 that no old or new FTA receiver can decode. A $7000.00 commercial receiver will be required. Looks like more FTA pickings are going bye bye.  How come all the new FTA receivers won't decode this, but a $20.00 OTA antenna will. Guess the FTA dealers have nothing new like they boast.

Abc is updating to a more efficient codec for their needs. Cbs also uses such a method and not available with FTA equipment. The licensing cost to add this codec to low cost FTA boxes and swap out the chipset would break their bank. Our Cisco D9865 receivers could have this codec easily added with a firmware update. Rainier Satellite though does not see it beneficial to our business model to add this. (We're not in the FTA business) This would add additional cost to the end user. We cannot justify it for FTA signals. We offer plenty of choices for programming with our subscription service with more on the way.

The FTA market is at the mercy of whatever the provider decides to do with its signal. A subscription service don't have such worries. Rainier delivers signals that you can count on when you turn on your TV. FTA does not.

Abc's plug's now been pulled, they updated their transmission mode.

It's funny reading these fta forums and the silly solutions they come up with. Its not easy anymore (scan the channels with a receiver and watch) Now you need a beefy computer, video card, and tuner source. Then the right codecs to decode the video. Then a way to feed this back to your TV to watch. All this external hardware just to watch an OTA network that can be simply received with a TV antenna.  :o

What's even funnier is watching Tek2000 talk to himself trying to put false hope into the cast of 5 real members over at TVROSAT, with a consumer low cost set top box solution that will perform all this. Rick's at least is realistic sayin he may be able to get some commercial gear for a low cost of $5000.00. A low cost box won't happen. Those hoping for one need to get with the program that its not feasible. Even if by a miracle something came out, all ABC would need to do is place conditional access in the stream and any non complaint box or beefy computer setup would be rendered useless.
