TeleCommunication Systems Launches Deployable X/Y Antenna System, Tracks Low-Earth + Medium-Earth Orbit Satellites

[SatNews] TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS) announced the availability of its new deployable X/Y Tracking Antenna System. Built on the proven technology of TCS’ fixed X/Y antenna systems, the deployable X/Y systems are specifically designed for low-Earth orbit (LEO) and medium-Earth orbit (MEO) satellites in support of Earth observation, remote sensing, and telemetry, tracking and control for tactical applications.

According to a February 2015 NSR report, more than 2,000 LEO satellites will be launched between 2015 and 2024; and a November 2013 Euroconsult report indicated that LEO and MEO satellites will account for approximately 66 percent of the satellite launches forecasted over the next 10 years. This is expected to create a higher demand for more ground station terminals and antenna systems capable of tracking these satellite systems.

Future Department of Defense (DoD) reconnaissance applications will include the use of LEO small satellite technology for quick, cost-effective earth imaging. TCS’ new X/Y Tracking Antenna System can be controlled or monitored from anywhere in the world.  TCS currently provides X/Y antenna solutions to military, higher education and commercial customers.

The X/Y Tracking Antenna System is offered with a 1.8-meter parabolic carbon petal reflector, which allows for light-weight transportation and a precision antenna surface that maximizes performance.  The system provides single and multi-band frequency feeds from L-band through Ku-band, which allows one antenna platform to be used across multiple satellite missions.

Ease-of-setup automated features include a self-leveling pedestal and differential GPS system that provides True North heading better than 0.1 degrees. These integrated features require minimal training for deployment. The system breaks down into two-man lift transit cases for ease of transport on commercial aircraft; two persons can set up the system in less than one hour.

The deployable configuration offers the same benefits as the fixed X/Y systems such as no keyhole at Zenith, no cable wrap, low dynamic tracking, high reliability, cost-effective manufacturing, and short delivery times. TCS’ best-in-class manufacturing techniques enable the most cost-effective satellite tracking solution in the industry, and can cut standard delivery time in half.

The X/Y configuration is designed specifically for LEO and MEO satellite tracking applications. With fewer moving parts, lower production costs and highly reliable operation at a low-tracking dynamic, the X/Y system is more affordable and provides the opportunity for small satellite operators and other organizations to procure their own dedicated terminals.

TCS Government Solutions Group President, Michael Bristol said, “With our new deployable X/Y Tracking Antenna, TCS offers a solution that is one of the best values in the industry. The use of LEO/MEO small satellite is growing rapidly for both commercial and military applications.  A deployable variant of our successful X/Y terminal was required to meet the highly mobile mission requirements for the Department of Defense. We have managed to incorporate lessons learned from our SNAP deployable VSATs to build this new revolutionary system.”
