The Niners didn't have to look far for their replacement for Jim Harbaugh.

San Francisco has chosen to promote defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to the top job, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday, per a source involved in the process. The team later announced the move.

Its rare that a NFL coach gets promoted to the Head Coaching job within the same team as the one he was with the previous season. Its even more rare for a team to hire a coach that hadn't previously been an Offensive or Defensive coordinator. But then again, this isn't the first time Jim Tomsula has been the head coach of the 49ers either, having taken over for one game in 2010 when they fired Mike Singletary. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the table having never been a coordinator in the NFL.
